Background and Introduction
Grid Resilience Through Intelligent Photovoltaic and Storage Phase 2 (GRIPS2) is a flagship initiative under UNIDO’s A2D Facility, designed to catalyze transformative change in Nepal’s industrial energy systems. Implemented by Practical Action in collaboration with Gham Power (Nepal) and Swanbarton (UK), the project demonstrates how cutting-edge technology innovation, clean energy solutions can enhance industrial productivity, accelerate decarbonization, strengthen energy security, and build climate resilience in low- and middle-income countries.
Aligned with the A2D Facility’s objective of advancing inclusive and sustainable industrial development through innovative and scalable energy interventions, GRIPS2 integrates an advanced AI-enabled microgrid management system with a 924-kW solar PV array and a 2 MW/ 4 MWh battery energy storage system. The system delivers uninterrupted and optimized power for energy-intensive operations by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, particularly diesel generators, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving operational cost-efficiency. This positions Laxmi Steel Industries, the host industrial partner, as a frontrunner in adopting sustainable energy practices and serves as a replicable model for similar industries across the region.
