Nepal clearly faces a serious and impending earthquake risk which makes having an emergency life supporting unit extremely crucial. British Embassy contains one such unit in their premises and is backed by Pure Solar PV System. Such units come with a container that stores medicines, food and other necessities which turn out helpful when catastrophes like earthquakes strikes and water, food and electricity become unavailable.

The British Embassy has a system from Gham Power installed which helps in providing electricity back up to the container with a panel of 185 watt which in turn produces 0.537 kWh (units) of electricity per day (and has provided 6 days of autonomy). The installation started on March 16, 2012 and was completed in 3 days time. The system designed as pure solar PV system supports the lights of the above mentioned container.

An uninterrupted power supply to lighten up the support container has been ensured by Gham Power. We are glad to be a part of this project and to have worked with the embassy that hosts such an important emergency life supporting unit.

The Rana sisters have installed a solar street light through Gham Power Nepal Pvt. Ltd. in the memory of their loving mother; they hope it would benefit the community as well. The street light automatically turns on and off during the dark hours illuminating the streets of Subidhanagar Tinkune.

The local community is excited about the newly installed light. They claim that it has increased their sense of personal and road safety. The Local shops around are also happy as they have been able to open their shops for longer hours in the evening

Shristi Rana the elder sisters says, “We wanted to do something in the name of our late mother Sushma Rana that also had some benefits for the community. So, we considered the idea about installing solar light. We are happy about the decision”. Prerana the younger sister adds, “The solar light has multiple merits. It lights up the street in our locality and at the same time use of solar energy makes it environmental friendly.

Mrs. Gopini Timilshina, a local resident says, “Previously the road was dark and frequent power cuts made it worse. We were scared to walk in the street during late evenings. With the solar light, things have changed for better. The solar street light is so bright that one can even study under the light. It is great! ”.

Gham Power installed the solar street light in January 2012. It has been performing well. since then.

The Monks going for gufa (meditation in seclusion, literal translation of “gufa” is “cave”) at the Triyana Retreat Center can do so without the distraction of load-shedding. Recently, the Khempo Guru of Kathmandu reached out to Gham Power to provide a solution for load shedding. Two visitors were going into gufa seeking enlightenment and they wanted absolute peace. Gham Power has now installed a GP-2000 system for their comfort.

The Khempo Guru with with the solar panel from Gham Power

The GP-2000 system at the Triyana Retreat Center consists of a 185-watt solar panel, and generates an average of 2.2 kwh (units) of electricity per day. That is enough to power the lights for the center, including the rooms for meditation, as well as powering the laptop at their office.

The rooms with the curtains drawn are for meditation

As the picture above shows, the meditation rooms are shielded from the outside world. The curtains shield the room from all natural light sources, so there needs to be electricity for the light bulbs. Since the monks and other visitors in meditation need absolute peace, even the outage of electricity from grid can disturb their meditation. Solar electricity from Gham Power ensures an uninterrupted power supply to these lights bulbs, and as such – enabling uninterrupted meditation sessions.

Residence of Khempo Guru and temple area, also powered by Gham Power system

“We are very happy with the solar electricity from Gham Power,” said the Khempo Guru when our staff visited the retreat. “The three people who are in meditation right now are very comfortable with the lights.”

February 01, 2012 – The hundreds of public transportation users in Kathmandu area will now have an earlier wait at the newly launched solar bus stands. Hon. Gagan Thapa and DIG Ganesh Raj Rai inaugurated the first solar bus stand outside NTB, towards Bhadrakali. This bus stand will provide safe shelter for all travelers at all times of the day. The entire bus stand has been powered by solar from Gham Power, ensuring lights for evening travelers.

Hon. Gagan Thapa and DIG Ganesh Raj Rai inaugurating solar bus stand

The project was initiated by Sunshine Exhibits, who has brought an international standard one-of-a-kind bus stand to Kathmandu. The bus stand has advertisement in bright background and is lit from the backside. Harish Agrawal from Sunshine Exhibits approached Gham Power for the technical expertise on how to light up the special lights for the advertisements. These back-lit advertisements will add an advantage in the evenings. The lights from the background will serve as safety lights for the people waiting for their bus to come. Best of all, the lights will be on regardless of electricity supply from the NEA grid line since it is solar powered.

These solar bus stands will undoubtedly brighten up the city while creating a safe waiting spot for travelers. The news was covered in several media including this photo piece by Republica, English Daily Newspaper:

Mandala Children Home (MCH), a home for orphans has found an angel in a German student who just sponsored a solar PV installation at the orphanage via Gham Power. MCH, located at Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu, shelters homeless children and helps provide them education, medical attention and other basic necessities. With the installation of solar PV from Gham Power, the children now have access to proper lighting for their studies, daily chores, and their communication is also better.

“The Gham Power system has been working well and we are happy that our children don’t have to live in darkness anymore,” says Mim Lal Shrestha the caretaker at Manadala Children’s Home.

Gham Power installed a 740-watt system that produces 2.2 units of electricity per day on average. This provides backup power to the lights for the rooms and also for other appliances like tv, fridge, computer, water pump and communication devices. The installation started on December 7, 2011 and was completed in 3 days.

The German student, who has chosen to stay anonymous, first heard about MCH from Nepal Kinderhilfe e.V., an organization in Germany that works to help the orphanage. She then collected funds from various people, some who she knew personally and some completely benevolent strangers. When she had gathered enough money, she came to Gham Power to select the best option for a solar PV system and ensured that the installation was complete before she left for her home country.

Mandala Children Home was founded three years ago, when their founders were faced with a situation in which a brother and sister suddenly became orphans, and there was no one to take care of these kids. So the founders agreed to invite these children to live with them, and a small home for orphans was launched. Today, they serve 20 children where Mim and Gita Lal Shrestha play sacrificing parents’ role and the children feel like having sisters.

While the orphanage gives their best in providing most of the basic facilities, they could not provide light to the students preparing for SLC, due to the loadshedding problem that has plagued our country. Gham Power is happy to have brought light into the lives of the children living in the orphanage, and equally honored and grateful to the amazing German student who made all this happen.
