Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can you use solar PV to heat water as well?
Answer:
The technology we use to producing electricity from solar is called photovoltaics, or PV in short – meaning it turns light into electricity, it has nothing to do with heat. So, to generate water steam – technically we will need to conver light into electricity first, and use that electricity to heat your water – which becomes quite expensive and as such is not suggested as a primary means to heat water.
The other alternative – is to use what’s called “Solar Thermal” – this is the same technology as the solar water heaters you typically find on top of most roofs in Nepali homes. The draw back is that here you are completely dependent on temperature, and so no cool days, you can’t generate steam.
There are some instances like in solar pool water heating, where both solar thermal and solar PV are used to heat up water – where on days warm enough, solar thermal heats the water, and on cold days or during nights, solar PV heats up the water
The other option is to use natural LPG gas (or biogas) – which is more cost effective
